2007. Little bench in the hallway where our scriptures sat from 12:05 pm every Sunday until the following Sunday at 8:55 am, when we snatched them up on our way to church. Handy...they were never misplaced.
Are you still reading after my scripture study confession yesterday? In the hope of redeeming myself, I have to explain that it hasn't always been this way. I have done better.
In 2006 in fact, the boys and I read the scriptures almost every night, finishing the Book of Mormon that year. Okay, okay...it wasn't the actual Book of Mormon. It was this:
This is an awesome book - it takes all the exciting stuff from several chapters and groups it together and retells it in a language that my boys can understand. And that Moms can understand.
There are a few gory pictures, couple of people being burned, stabbed, or otherwise destroyed and humbled. This was my favorite picture.
The year before that we were reading this version - even simpler.
Just a sentence or two to go with each picture.
So I have done better in the past, mainly reading with the boys. We really fell out of the habit last year though. And with Troy gone most nights, it's all up to me, yadda yadda yadda. Sometimes it would be ten o'clock when I was tucking the boys into bed and I just didn't have it in me. Blah blah blah.
I need to do better. I can do better. I will do better.
This year, with renewed ambition and resolve, I'm bringing out the big guns. Large print edition.
No pictures, just words.
Hold me.
A few days ago, I mentioned to Cameron that after the first of the year we'd be reading our scriptures every night (and by every night, I probably mean Monday - Thursday), and trying to hold Family Home Evening more often. It was something we really needed to be doing...it was my New Year's Resolution
He chuckled. It had to be a chuckle - he wouldn't have laughed at me, would he?
"We probably won't do that."
"What? Why not?"
"Just 'cause."
And with that, I accepted his challenge.
We started last night.

My goal is to read my scriptures every day -I try to always go for one little column on the page, and usually I'm bound to finish the whole chapter...little trick, I guess.
I'm also trying to pray on my knees more...I'm severely guilty of praying when I'm already lying in bed.
It's funny how kids are with the scriptures. Mine are fine when Brent is not home, but watch out when he is. Some whining and anger. Go figure. But it is a must at our house. These guys leave for missions in 3-4 1/2 years. Not much time left.
Way to not "laugh' at your Mom Cam.
Also guilty of praying while in bed. Aaaaahhh - the boys do too! That's a small but important fix we should add to this new year.
Angi - Is the whining and anger from the boys or from Brent? Hehehe.
I agree - the time goes by so stinkin' fast - and before we know it they'll be gone.
Alina sent me this website where they will email you the scriptures a chapter a day. I thought that would be perfect because I do read my email. But I confess...I haven't signed up yet.
Check it out anyway. www.readthescriptures.com
I saw that website when I was looking for a scripture sticker chart kind of thing. It does look cool - it lets you highlight passages and it will bookmark where you left off, etc.
"Cameron, Aaron...you got an email...from Nephi."
"We probably won't do that." I laughed out loud. You can do it! Go Wendy Go Wendy Go Wendy!
I love Nora's idea from the previous blog (on the kitchen table). You guys are so good!
I'm totally going to do the email scripture a day! I luv it.
Wend-is your goal to read everyday or to read the whole book in a year?
The actual goal is probably too vague. I simply want to read the scriptures with the boys more often than not. We tend to have much more structure during the school week, so right now, that's what I'm aiming for. We'll probably read Sunday night thru Thursday night. Any extra nights will just be a bonus. I'm trying to stay flexible enough that I don't get discouraged (and give up) if we do miss occasionally.
We've done it two nights in a row - hooray for us!
Now to try praying on knees...
funny boy that cam! your goals are high but I know you can do it.
wanna hear a secret? I don't even take my bible with me to church...can you believe it? I am so bad! They just always put the verses/scripture up on the screen and I'm lazy, not a good combination is it?! maybe this should be a new year goal for me too. man, way to make me think, dishes...thanks a lot.
Hahaha, Pinklady! I'm lazy too - the teacher will ask someone to find a verse and read it, and I look around at everyone flipping through their scriptures and think "Eeeehhh, they'll get there before I will...I'll just let them do it."
Good for you. I love the beginning of the year. Everyone has the resolve to do better and be better. What a great goal!
Good goal dishes! I love that you have it set up to not be discouraged. Jesus would be proud of you. Satan would want you to get discouraged!
